We take great pride in our school system, but rather than hear it from us - we asked the Superintendents throughout our region what makes their District so unique:
"Parents choose our schools for the same reasons they choose to live in Burlington - many want to be close to work, arts, culture, the lake. Our schools tap into all of the things that attract people to Burlington, such as:
1) LOCATION: Burlington kids get more real-world learning opportunities, arts, and exploration. Students have incredible access to the rich resources of
the city of Burlington to expand learning opportunities -- our local businesses, Intervale, Lake Champlain, Flynn Theatre, Fletcher Free Library, UVM, Champlain College ECHO, Non-profits, Senior Centers, City Government are within minutes of our schools. (e.g. Healthy Kids, Healthy Neighborhoods project; BHS kids kayaking in Lake Champlain and biking on the bike path -- IN GYM!)
2) CHILD HEALTH/ENVIRONMENT: All of our schools are within a 7-mile radius -- and close to the center of Burlington. Lots of options for kids to walk and bike to school. Our schools work to increase campus practices for sustainability - encouraging walking and biking, composting, increasing fresh and local food options for snack and lunch.
3) EXCELLENT TEACHERS: Passionate, committed, experienced professionals who are continually learning through top-notch professional development programs provided by the district, as well as individual initiative, evidenced by teacher enrollment and completion of coursework at St. Mike's and UVM. Teachers participate in Professional learning communities where teachers learn from each other, and help develop new teachers.
4) EXPANSIVE AND DIVERSE CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR OPTIONS AND A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY - We enjoy AP courses, Access to college classes and credit while still in high school, Expansive World Language Offerings, Spanish starting in Elementary School, state of the art new Math Curriculum, Responsive Classroom, after school Homework Help, ELL, Drama, Music, Sports, Clubs AND students learn from each other in a student body that includes kids from all over the world and from every demographic background
5) VISION, LEADERSHIP + COMMUNITY SUPPORT: We just adopted a vision for our schools through a community-process including students, teachers, parents and residents. We have clear goals for the future and support from our community. We just passed a facilities bond to begin upgrading our school buildings and to increase support for maintenance, and we have passed our school budget for the past several years. Our superintendent works closely with our school teams, city leadership, and parents to help all of our kids succeed. We are actively engaged in cutting-edge public school transformation initiatives."
